The crimped sample vial is sealed by squeezing the septum between the edge of the glass vial and the crimped aluminum cap. This forms an excellent seal against evaporation. The septa remains in place during the autosampler needle piercing process. Crimping vials requires Hand crimping to perform the sealing process.
