Too easily overlooked, the vials, caps and septa that come in contact with the sample are a critical component of a successful analysis. Structurally, they must ensure a tight and secure fit in the analytical instrument. Compositionally, they must be able to withstand chemical and mechanical forces within a defined range.

Pierce the vial septa, then screw the needle into the vial by rotating the needle depth gauge. Maintain the injection port temperature below the maximum recommended temperature of the fiber. Conduct headspace sampling whenever possible to minimize extraction or carry over of high molecular weight compounds that coat the fiber.

A large percentage of autosamplers are equipped with trays that use 12x32mm 2mL vial but there are instruments, i.e. the Waters Wisp, require a 15x45mm 4mL vial.
